diploma thesis - visualize invisible

[09.08]
abstract

The main question of this thesis is where or how invisibility appears in media art, especially in digital art. Therefore different positions of media theory, philosophy as well as aspects of contemporary art are rolled up. Starting with the statement that society loses power of imagination, the picture is picked out as a central theme in the first chapter and is confronted with the text. Furthermore the items invisibility and tracks are discussed. Besides parallels are pulled to digital art and to data visualisation and some artists and their work are introduced. In the last chapter the thesis elaborates the tools which are used to produce digital work. Different concepts are discussed as black box, machine art or digital art.
The study concludes that invisibility is not only expressed in a visual way, but also in the Meta-level. Which means in the tools of the production itself.

The practical work, an interactive installation with the title »uncover the unseen - cover the scene« takes up an other aspect of the thesis. This other aspect is the item »longterm-track« with reference to Freud´s considerations of the »Wunderblock«. In the work these longterm-tracks are shown in a three-dimensional, organically growing structure. Input for the installation are the positions as well as the movement of the people in a room. Tracks refer to visibility of the past. The structure visualises these tracks of the past and the present in real-time, which would not be visible otherwise.

This is my printed diploma thesis. I should give this animation another try. but for now it should do the job…
